The Zoo Displays Three Wooden Carousel Animals

Contest Begins for Guessing the Weight of the Critters

The Kansas City Zoo has received the first three of what will be 36 hand-carved wooden carousel animals for an Endangered Species Carousel, scheduled to open for the 2007 season. The three animals, a chimpanzee, hippopotamus, and rhinoceros, are on display in the Zoo’s main gift shop.

November and December Zoo visitors will see the animals and get a chance to win a season pass on the classic carousel. The animals will remain on display through Dec. 31, and during that time, every paid Zoo visitor will receive a pass good for one free ride on the finished carousel.

In addition, every visitor in November and December can guess the weight of each of the three carousel animals. Entries may be submitted until Dec. 31, 2006. The winning entries (one per animal) will receive a free carousel pass for the 2007 season.

The carousel is currently under construction at The Carousel Works in Mansfield, Ohio, and is expected to be in place and operational by Memorial Day weekend. It will be on the new Promenade, adjacent to the lorikeet exhibit.
