As we begin the New Year, there are a number of exciting projects already underway or getting ready to start. The Troost Max (rapid transit) is a reality and work progresses on the Troost Bridge over Brush Creek. The Swope Health South Clinic, 8825 Troost, is open for business bringing much needed healthcare to the southern part of the city. Public funds and plans have been approved for new sidewalks, curbs, and driveways on 63rd St. from Harrison to Oak St. on the west side. Work has begun on the 63rd St. Design Plan which will provide a framework for future infrastructure and beautification improvements, and recommendations to spur development.
In Waldo, plans are finalized for an upgrade of the Park & Ride lot at Wornall and Gregory Blvd. The Waldo Community Improvement District (Waldo CID) will be funding a new gateway into Waldo at this location. Work is expected to begin this spring. A long range plan is under development for the Waldo CID to better determine future improvements, beautification projects, and promotions for the Waldo CID area. The City will begin reconstructing Wornall Road from 79th to 85th St. (hopefully taking care of all the water breaks along the way!)
Brookside commerce will expand as several new tenants open up in the Missouri Bank building (previously Star Motors). The gas lamps are being refurbished and new banners are coming soon. As we work to go greener in Brookside, the restaurants are now recycling their glass with special Ripple glass containers at their locations. (Please continue to use the public glass recycle bins at the Berbiglia stores in Brookside and Waldo for your own recycling). Watch for a new sculpture in Brookside created by the students of Border Star under the direction of artist Paul Storms.
These are just a few of the many activities and efforts underway in your community. Of course, there will be the annual events of the St. Pat's Parade, Art Fair, After Hours Business Exchange, pub crawls, the fall festival, etc. Committees will be working on all the projects and volunteers are always needed. None of this is possible without the support and participation of members of the community working together to make Southtown, Waldo, and Brookside a great place to live, work, and do business!
