Thread -- "that which runs through the whole course of something, connecting successive parts." For more than two decades, Southtown Council has been the common thread of connection for area neighborhoods, businesses and institutions. Whether it's strengthening existing businesses or welcoming new ones, giving leadership to neighborhood stabilization efforts, or working to improve the economic vitality of the area, Southtown's creation of linkages and partnerships among its stakeholders continues to create an environment for ongoing economic development and community improvement.
Since its inception Southtown has continued to live out its mission by working with its members and the surrounding community to make measurable, sustainable improvements for the area. Because of its advocacy efforts, more than $19 million in public improvements has been leveraged for the area. In addition, over 100 business owners along Troost Avenue have been assisted with the renovation of their storefronts through the Façade Rebate Program, a now defunct city program. On the drawing board is a possible Community Improvement District (CID) along the Troost Corridor. Approval of the initiative could mean much needed streetscape improvements, graffiti abatement, litter control, a façade rebate program, and improvements to curbs, sidewalks and other public infrastructure along the corridor. All of these efforts as well as the operations of Southtown Council have been funded solely through business, institution, and association memberships, and with the assistance of the Southtown Foundation’s many supporters.
Southtown's leadership is supported by a variety of volunteers that serve on the council's standing committees and address issues such as beautification, membership, fund development, planning and development, programming, public affairs and safety issues. Together, these committees comprise a network of individuals that develop initiatives to support the efforts of Southtown.
As we look toward another year of improving our community, Southtown will continue to need your support. Together we can build ongoing, permanent relationships that can lead to the shared vision that each of us has for the community where we live, work and play. I look forward to taking that journey with you.
