This year, the construction of the Miller Nichols Learning Center added 1,000 classroom seats and a dramatic south-facing entrance to the new building and existing Miller Nichols Library on the UMKC campus. The Center houses the Jeanette Nichols Forum, the Courtney S. Turner Hall and four state-of-the-art lecture-style classrooms.
The Learning Center provides a place where students and community members come for “instruction and advice; where they can study and write and collaborate; where our fundamental values of teaching, learning and scholarship are practiced— and revered,” said Gail Hackett,
Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost of UMKC.
The transformation of the library through the addition of Roobot the Robot, the ongoing renovation of the library spaces and the addition of the learning center were made possible with gifts from the Miller Nichols Charitable Foundation and from Jeanette Nichols. According to Miller Nichols daughter, Kay Callison, “From the first Nichols venture into building planned neighborhoods, we have been mindful of the vital role that education plays in the establishment and expansion of healthy communities. That’s why we support UMKC, because it has for many years been a strong partner for neighborhoods and our for our city.”
The Miller Nichols Learning Center was awarded the December Southtown Sparkle Award. Congratulations!
