I love all things Kansas City and I always have. So, I did not hesitate when I was given the opportunity to intern at Southtown Council. As a senior at The University of Missouri Kansas City, my concentration of Neighborhood and Community development is continuously cultivated under the leadership of Marti Lee. And when I’m not following Marti around or buried under a mound of schoolwork, I can be found working for my parents’ company, Oasis Food Products, producing and delivering the first local hummus in Kansas City, Mohamed’s World’s Greatest.
Although my schedule keeps me busy, Southtown offers a wealth of experiences to further my understanding in my chosen area of study. Already, I have witnessed the passion and dedication of citizens and business owners to their neighborhoods and the organization it takes to make these neighborhoods successful.
The opportunities for learning and furthering the expertise in my field are literally endless and the experiences of working with the different CID’s and business associations are not lessons I could gain in the classroom. Sitting in on Waldo Streetscape Planning meetings is just one example of real life learning in action, and continues to drive home the importance of creating community through the built environment. I am so thrilled to have been given this opportunity and would like to thank all of the incredible staff and members at Southtown, Waldo, and Brookside for this experience.
