The Southtown Environment and Public Works Committee selected the New York Bakery and Delicatessen, 7016 Troost Ave., for the March Sparkle Award. In business since 1905, the Bakery has been at this location since 1943. Current owners, James and Barbara Holzmark took over the family owned/operated business in 1981. Talk about a Kansas City tradition!
The New York Bakery and Delicatessen specializes in kosher breads, pastries, other baked goods and wonderful meats and cheeses. According to the Holzmarks, “We are like a lower east side New York delicatessen. We are home of the awesome Reuben!” Other specialties include homemade chopped liver and herring in cream sauce (one of my favorites!).
If you have driven down Troost Avenue, you couldn’t miss the beautiful new awnings outlining the New York Bakery and Delicatessen. In addition to the new awnings, the roof was repaired and some interior improvements were made.
The Southtown Council extends their congratulations to the New York Bakery and Delicatessen for being one of Kansas City’s anchors and for doing their part to help make Southtown sparkle!
