Beloved former Kansas City mayor Dick Berkley was celebrated on Nov. 30 by Southtown as the 2007 American Citizen. In his three-term tenure as mayor, from 1979 to 1991, Berkley oversaw many capital investments, shepherded inspired civic efforts and enjoyed remarkable support and approval. Known for his caring and ability to build consensus, Berkley’s legacy was deserving of this special recognition.
Southtown’s luncheon was a stylish, but fun, affair. His honor, the former mayor, was joined by the likes of venerable bandleader Tony DiPardo and other luminaries. Steve Kraske of The Kansas City Star narrated a slide presentation which highlighted Berkley’s vibrant career, including the host of celebrities he has met. The luncheon is chaired by Ollie Gates, Carl DiCapo and Anita Gorman. Special thanks to the sponsors that made this event possible: Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Cleveland Chiropractic College, Cosentino’s Food Markets/BKS Real Estate, Commerce Bank, HCA Midwest Health System, Helzberg Foundation, JE Dunn Construction, Miller & Company, MGE, Muehlebach Funeral Home, Nazarene World Headquarters, People to People International, Top Innovations, and UMKC.
