The Corporation for National and Community Service honored the University of Missouri-Kansas City with the Presidential Award for Service to Youth from Disadvantaged Circumstances. UMKC was one of only three colleges and universities to earn that distinction. The award was presented at the American Council on Education annual conference.
“For more than 75 years, our university has been a partner and a resource for Kansas City,” said UMKC Chancellor Leo E. Morton. “Urban engagement remains one of the key elements of UMKC’s mission. Active citizenship goes to the heart of our strategic planning and provides the direction for what we do and where we’re going. This award is a great honor and a confirmation that we continue to measure up to our long-standing commitment to community service.”
The Honor Roll’s Presidential Award is the highest federal recognition a school can achieve for its commitment to service-learning and civic engagement. Honorees for the award were chosen based on a series of selection factors including scope and innovativeness of service projects, percentage of student participation in service activities, incentives for service, and the extent to which the school offers academic service-learning courses. Congratulations, UMKC!
