The Southtown Environment and Public Works committee selected the Linda Hall Library of Science, Engineering and Technology, 5109 Cherry St. for the November Sparkle Award.
In operation for 60 years, the library is the largest privately funded research library, specializing in science, engineering and technology, open to the public in the world. The library’s collections of more than 1 million volumes are broad, rich, and include material dated from 1473. The journal collection comprises the largest holdings with 47,000 plus titles in more than 40 languages. The book collection includes monographs and conference proceedings from around the world. It also has a noteworthy collection of patent information for inventor’s use. Did you know that the library is known for its outstanding collection of tree peonies, one of the largest west of the Mississippi River?
Linda Hall is open to everyone and offers help to anyone needing information in the fields mentioned above. Requests for help can be made in person, via telephone, email, fax, or mail. Reference librarians are available to help with questions and teach people how to find information.
Over the past 18 months, the Linda Hall Library had a three story expansion and renovation project that added 30,000 sq. ft. of space. Over 16.5 miles of shelving was added, bringing the total to 32 miles! A geothermal heating/cooling system was installed that included 100 holes dug 650 ft. deep on the south lawn. Parking was expanded with the addition of 60 spaces. The plaza and steps leading to the front door were equipped with an ice-melt system. A new History of Science Research Center was created for the rare books that are shelved in a climate-controlled vault with a glass wall where people have a spectacular view of the books. A cosmology theater was added that continuously shows space related programs. Other improvements included the installation of energy efficient lighting fixtures, a new and improved reference desk, relocation of the exhibitions to either side of the front door, a new sound system for lectures, and more individual study spaces, study rooms and a classroom.
Congratulations to The Linda Hall Library for the major reinvestment made in Southtown. If you haven’t been to the library, now is the time to check it out!
