Waldo’s Best - Hot Out of the Oven

McLain's BakeryMcLain's BakeryMcLain’s Bakery’s recent decision to relocate was prompted by a sign from above; the ceiling of their old location collapsed into a fresh batch of dough. They moved their business to 201 E. Gregory because they saw the opportunity for a sunny, open, clean, and structurally sound space that allowed ample room for operation, pastry display, and café seating. What they were not expecting was the welcome they received from the neighborhood. The bakery has become the destination for mothers taking their young children on outings and an after-school hang-out for local youth. “Whenever had any visitors like this before at our store. Gregory Blvd is so much quieter than the expressway we were on and people walk in here. I can’t say it enough, we are so happy to be in the neighborhood,” owner Don Peattie said.

McLain’s has been baking traditional Danish pastries since 1945. They use 250 pounds of flour per week to create a tempting assortment of daily baked sweet dough goods, cupcakes, cake balls, macaroons, and cookies. They also craft special occasion cakes. Don and his wife Patti are passing their expertise on to Patti’s son Chris, already a cinnamon roll master, who plans to continue the family business into the next generation.

Peattie invested about $35,000 into what was the Hoover Vacuum store. Don did much of the demolition himself and reported removing 3 tons of material from the building as he opened the space up and exposed the ceilings. New floors, walls, windows, HVAC, electric and water systems were installed to bring the building up to snuff. Sofas, chairs, and tables were added to create a lounge space at the front of the store. Waldo Area Business Association congratulates McLain’s Bakery for being Waldo’s Best and thanks them for creating a pleasant neighborhood sweet spot.
