Have you seen the newest marker in Waldo at Gregory and Wornall Road? This is the Waldo Community Improvement District’s latest project to enhance Waldo’s identity and boundaries.
The marker, designed by Darryl Hawkins of Innovative Design & Renovation, was built to be unique but with similar characteristics of the main Waldo monument at 75th and Wornall.
Hawkins also served as construction project manager. Other contributors to the project included: Brian Stapinski, a third-generation ironworker; Kristopher Dabner of The Greensman, who designed and planted the landscaping; Susan Song and David Burgett of Duracomm, who designed the LED lighting; David Wirken of Wirken Electric, who provided the electrical work; Tycon Company, which supplied the concrete, and Steven Carroll, structural engineer.
A dedication celebration of the new “gateway” to Waldo took place at 11 a.m. onA dedication celebration of the new “gateway” to Waldo took place at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 1. Those participating in the festivities included Honorary Waldo Mayor Jerry Singer, of Jerry Singer Automotive Service, Sam Gromowsky, of Almar Printing and president of the Waldo CID; Dick Jarrold, senior director of the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority; Kansas City Councilman John Sharp, and a performance by students at Southwest High School.
Since its formation in 2009, the Waldo CID is charged with promoting safety and security, keeping the public right-of-way clean and removing graffiti, marketing and promoting the Waldo area, supporting community events and beautification efforts. To date, Waldo has added the Waldo Wizards, Waldo Roadrunners, Waldo Lizards (Chameleon Resources), Waldo Wednesdays, monthly advertising throughout Kansas City, special sweepstakes, and now the new Waldo Gateway.
To aid in further branding Waldo and beautifying the community, additional gateways and landscaped areas are also being considered by the district. The Waldo Area Business Association and Waldo CID would like to thank the ATA and the Country Club Right of Way Committee for allowing the gateway to be built on their property.
