Habitat for Humanity KC Comes to Southtown

Habitat for Humanity Kansas City's Spring Build Season is an opportunity for 2011 Habitat homeowners, volunteers, sponsors and supporters to come together for the first build project in the Southtown community. Habitat is excited to honor founders John and Mary Pritchard at the [img_assist|nid=679|title=Habitat Build|desc=|link=node|align=left|width=351|height=263]newly named site, "Pritchard Place," located off of 66th Ter. between Troost and Paseo. This project is being done in partnership with the City of Kansas City, Missouri which provided PIAC funding for the street construction and HUD HOME Funding towards the construction of five new homes. The new street, Singleton Way (honoring longtime Habitat supporters Kite and Marty Singleton), street's infrastructure features bio-swales to reduce storm water run-off on the project site. Two other homes adjacent to Pritchard Place are HUD Funded Neighborhood Stabilization Program projects.

Pistachios Embroidery & Gifts- Waldo's Best

The Waldo Area Business Association Property Committee selected Pistachios Embroidery & Gifts, 205 E Gregory Blvd., for the May Waldo Best award. In business for 5 years, owner Sharon [img_assist|nid=677|title=Pistachios|desc=|link=node|align=right|width=320|height=240] Kennedy started working from home and grew into this current and largest location last July after being tucked away at Hathaway Shoes on Wornall Rd. Kennedy was born and raised in the Brookside/Waldo area and has never considered living anywhere else.

According to Kennedy, "One of the big benefits of the new location was the opportunity for signage that reflected the spirit of the business. So, Pistachios placed a large, pistachio green awning on the front of the building featuring the Pistachios logo. The new awning brightened the facade of the building and has been key in customers' ability to locate the shop." The bright awning and large front windows now offer customers and passersby a glimpse of the colorful products featured inside. This is the first large, windowed storefront for Pistachios and the business is benefitting from the added visibility. Other improvements include outside planters, interior paint and new lighting.

Pistachios offers gifts for everyone on your list! Specializing in personalized and monogrammed gifts, Pistachios is a great place to shop for baby, birthdays, graduations, weddings, hostesses and yourself! You can also bring in merchandise from the outside the shop and Pistachios can add a name or monogram for you. Congratulations to Pistachios Embroidery & Gifts for being one of Waldo's best!

The Waldo Monument and Fountain area at 75th and Wornall Rd. is the most recent recipient of a "Random Act of Kindness." The fresh new look is possible due to the generosity of Mike Allmon and Complete Turf and Landscape, 209 W. 74th Terrace. Mike was looking for a way to give back to the community and thought what better way than to donate his expertise to help maintain and[img_assist|nid=670|title=Tulips|desc=|link=node|align=left|width=120|height=80] nurture a vital part of Waldo. Allmon has offered his services on an ongoing basis to help keep the area around the Waldo Monument trimmed, manicured and looking the best it can. He recently installed new landscaping that has a better survival rate for growing in rocks and around concrete! Thanks Mike for being a great member of the Waldo Area Business Association and giving so much to Waldo!!
