Central United Methodist Church (CUMC), 5144 Oak St. recently opened “theConnect,” a new gathering space for the congregation. In addition to a place to gather before services on Sunday and have a cup of coffee, a youth space and additional storage were added in the basement. Other improvements included the stained glass window from the east transept area taken apart piece by piece and restored in the new east wall, thus transforming the outside stone walls to become the new inside walls of the space.
As CUMC neared completion of the building, members of the congregation volunteered many hours weeding, planting and cleaning out existing plant beds. Stone was used from the building to create the new flower beds. A sprinkler system was added on the east side of the church and repairs were made to the existing system.
Interior work included a wooden coffee bar and welcome desk made by members of the congregation. Another member made the metal stair railing as well as the metal wall by the new bathrooms. Renovation is now underway on the older part of the church.
The Southtown community is invited to drop in and see the wonderful changes at Central. Services on Sunday are at 8:30am and 10:50am, Sunday School for all ages at 9:30am. Thank you, Central United Methodist, for “sparkling” in Southtown since 1938!
