Make room in your plans for the Upper Room this summer! The Swope Corridor Renaissance/Upper Room Inc. is a neighborhood-based non-for-profit organization providing high-quality out-of-school education programs to low-income families in the urban area of Kansas City, MO. Their mission is “Education for Life.”
Opened in 1999, the Upper Room began as a Summer Academic Camp to serve some of the many school age children that reside within the 64130 zip code. Since its inception, the Upper Room has grown to serve thousands of families and youth.
A key component to the Summer Academic Camp are the volunteer tutors working one-on-one with students on reading. Each classroom has a certified teacher who directs volunteers as needed. Tutoring is from 8a to noon, Monday through Friday. Tutors can stay for an hour or up to four hour.
There are more than 20 locations throughout the KC area. Tutors must be 12 years of age or above. Those that are 18 or older must complete a background check before volunteering. Interested?
