21st Annual After Hours– Another Success!

In 1992, the Southtown Council celebrated its ten-year anniversary with the After Hours Business Exchange at St. John’s Center (now home to Pathway Academy at 72nd and Paseo) The intent was to “provide businesses located or doing business in Southtown the opportunity to meet potential customers and promote their business.” And the event did just that!

Over the years, the location has changed, moving from Cleveland Chiropractic College to the current location at Alphapointe, 75th and Prospect Ave. In 1997, the event grew to include the Waldo Area Business Association and the following year, the Kansas City Convention and Visitors Association joined in as a sponsor.

The Old and The New Sparkle

AngleThe Southtown Beautification Committee is pleased to announce Angle and Associates’ property located at 6398 Troost Ave. as the April Southtown Sparkle Award recipient. Fred Angle has owned the property for more than 12 years. The property includes three tenants: Radio Shack, Underground Clothing, and the newly added Midtown Laundry. Radio Shack has been in business at this location for more than 30 years!

More than $50,000 was spent in renovating the space and purchasing the equipment for the new Midtown Laundry. The location features 52 washers and 50 dryers as well as big screen TV’s. The new automatic entry doors are helpful for those entering with their hands full. Angle noted, “Business is always improving. All it takes is someone coming in to realize it’s a nicer atmosphere with more available washers and dryers than any other Laundromat in the city.”

Meet and Greet

Volunteers from the Waldo Area Business Association, Brookside Business Association, and the Southtown Council will be hitting the streets in April and May to visit with area businesses and organizations. This annual tour provides the opportunity for volunteers to meet and greet fellow business owners and managers, explain and promote area marketing opportunities and projects, while also learning about their issues/concerns. The Southtown Blitz takes place on April 9 through 11, the Waldo Walk Around occurs May 7 through 9, and Brookside follows the next week. If you are interested in “walking the streets” or want to schedule a visit, contact the Southtown Planning Center, 816-523-5553.
