Letter from the Southtown President

It has been more than seven years since Southtown first won my heart. As a first-time home buyer, I found myself unable to resist the character and diversity of its neighborhoods. My affection only grew as I explored the area and learned more about its rich history. A few years later I accepted a job at the Stowers Institute and a role on the Southtown Council's board of directors. Since then, I have discovered that, in many ways, Southtown is a microcosm of Kansas City - experiencing some of our city's greatest opportunities and wrestling with some of its greatest challenges, all within our small geographic area.

The Colonial Shops Sparkle!

This month, the Southtown Beautification Committee selected The Colonial Shops, 300-320 E. 51st St. as the Sparkle recipient. The buildings were constructed in 1951 and currently are home to Pride Cleaners, Subway Real Estate Corp., Kin Lin Restaurant, Muddy's, and a vacant space previously home to Russell Stover Candy. In 2007, the UMKC Trustees purchased the Colonial Shops to assist in funding scholarships for UMKC.

Welcome to the Link

Over the years, Southtown, Waldo, and Brookside have joined forces by holding monthly combined networking and luncheon events and producing one annual directory, "The Link." The organizations share office space, administration, and staffing, thus sharing expenses and increasing resource efficiencies. Now we are making another linkage - one monthly newsletter. We hope you will enjoy hearing news about all three communities and will become more informed about happenings throughout the area.

More Tulips on Troost

Tulips on Troost made a strong showing in 2009 by planting approximately 15,000 tulips along Troost Avenue and working alongside 100 volunteers throughout the planting season. In addition to the planting events, the organization formed new partnerships, ranging from a new project to be named "Lilies on Linwood," to coordinating with the KCATA to plant tulips at the new Troost MAX bus line stops and stations.
